Behavioral Artists Ep13: Precursor Behaviors

About this course

Challenging behavior rarely happens without context—and often, there are opportunities to intervene long before behavior reaches its highest intensity. In this CEU podcast episode, behavior analysts will learn how to identify precursor behaviors and use them to develop proactive, function-based treatment plans. We’ll explore practical strategies for recognizing patterns of escalation, modifying antecedents, teaching functional replacement behaviors, and developing effective consequence strategies that reinforce communication and regulation before higher-intensity behavior occurs. Special attention will be given to co-regulation, meaningful coping skills, functional communication, and teaching learners to navigate frustration, waiting, denial, transitions, and other challenging situations. Throughout the episode, we’ll connect these strategies to behavior-analytic research and discuss how clinicians can move beyond simply responding to challenging behavior toward creating environments that prevent escalation and build lasting skills.
